用于农业与园艺方面的高吸水性树脂又称为保水剂和土壤改良剂。我国是世界上缺水较严重的国家，因此，保水剂的应用就显得越来越重要，目前国内已有十几家科研院所的研制高吸水性树脂产品用于粮、棉、油、糖、烟、果、菜、林等60多种植物上进行应用试验，推广面积超过7万多公顷，并在西北、内蒙等地利用高吸水性树脂进行大面积防砂绿化造林。用于这方面的高吸水性树脂主要是淀粉接枝丙烯酸盐聚合交联物和丙烯酰胺-丙烯酸盐共聚交联物，其中盐已由钠型转向钾型。使用的方法主要有拌种、喷撤、穴施、或用水调成糊
